In fact, it has already happened. They had their eyes set on Nikita Zadorov, but they lost their chance as he joined the Vancouver Canucks a few weeks ago.
Now, Treliving could lose another one of their alleged top trade targets.
Flames' Chris Tanev had been linked to the Maple Leafs on several occasions by analysts and experts. Treliving's need for top defensemen led many to believe Tanev would fit well with the Leafs.
However, he could be unavailable for quite some time.
Last night, he had to leave the game following a scary hit by the Avalanche's Ross Colton.
Here's how it went down:
While no update has been provided by the Flames, one can expect Tanev to be sidelined for a while.
If Treliving was planning to make a move for him, things just got a lot more complicated.
We don't know yet if the defenseman will make a full recovery, and Treliving is probably holding his breath right now. However, if he ends up missing a few months, there are still other candidates out there for the Maple Leafs. Even though Tanev would probably be the ideal choice, others could do the job.
