That's what Leafs GM Brad Treliving did, as he signed John Klingberg to a one-year contract, worth $4.15 million. Even if this signing seems to be a low risk one, his performances will be key to the success of the team next season.
There has been a lot of chatter going on around Klingberg abilities on the defense. Yes, he's an excellent offensive option as a d-man, but Klingberg has to be better in his end.
As stated earlier, Toronto lost a good piece in Luke Schenn. However, if the Leafs pair Klingberg with a good defensive defenseman, it could be absolutely huge for the team. Don't forget that he played with the Anaheim Ducks last season, a horrible team. Pretty much no one looked good on that roster...
When you look at the roster on the blue line for Toronto, one partner seems to be ideal for Klingberg: Jake McCabe. He's a good defensive defenseman, and that's what Klingberg needs.
On this potential pair, you will have a great offensive and defensive presence, which is what you are often looking for.
Anyways, let's see if this signing is a good one for the Leafs!
