Rodion Amirov's KHL team Salavat Yulaev Ufa recently honored the late Amirov before their game. The team decided to retire Amirov's number 27 lifting it to the rafters forever.
This gesture is just the latest remembrance of Amirov that the team has done since he passed away. They also had a memorial service for Amirov in their arena where all his teammates could pay their respects.
This has led some to wonder what the Toronto Maple Leafs will do to honor Amirov once the season begins.
While Rodion Amirov only played a few organized games with the Toronto Maple Leafs organization he became a huge part of the group. Since his passing many have wondered what the Leafs will do to honor him. A ceremony and moment of silence is likely to be held. But could the Maple Leafs also retire his number?
Amirov could not have worn the number 27 for the Maple Leafs due to having belonged to Maple Leafs legend Frank Mahovlich. This likely means he would've worn 72 the inverse of his preferred number as many players do. For the Leafs no one has worn the number 72 that has had a significant impact on the organization. It is also not a popular number throughout the NHL with only a few players choosing it. Therefore it would be a perfect number to use to honor Amirov going forward.
It remains to be seen what the Maple Leafs will do to honor Rodion Amirov. It is sure to be an emotional night whenever the Leafs do decide to honor Amirov at a game.
