Nick Robertson has struggled to stay healthy during his time in the Maple Leafs organization. He is finally healthy again and off to a torrid start in the AHL. Robertson has 5 points in his first 2 AHL games and has looked great.
With his great start fans and media have been speculating on his future with the Maple Leafs. This includes a prominent insider who gives some insight into what the options are.
On the latest episode of the 32 Thoughts Podcast Elliotte Friedman speculated on the future of Nick Robertson in Toronto. Friedman wonders what the future is for Robertson in Toronto if there is one.
Then he moved on to what he had heard about the organization's communication to Robertson.
It basically sounds like the Maple Leafs have given Robertson the keys to his own future. If he plays well they are willing to bring him up as one of their first options. He is doing that so far and putting himself on management's radar.
If he continues to struggle though Friedman did mention that we are reaching a territory where a change of scenery could be beneficial. Similar to Mackenzie Blackwood needing to leave New Jersey.
Either way, it sounds as though Nick Robertson's time with the Maple Leafs organization is at a pivotal point. Either he can succeed and end up on the main roster soon or struggle and end up finding himself in a new home.
If Robertson continues excelling it'll be interesting to see how long it takes for the Maple Leafs to give him his next NHL opportunity.
