There is a growing speculation and curiosity surrounding what the next contract could look like for Toronto Maple Leafs< captain John Tavares, and we may have just gotten a possible idea of a sample.
Kopitar Contract Giving Leafs Ideas
Just recently, the Los Angeles Kings and captain Anze Kopitar came to agreement on a two year extension worth $14 million. He will earn an AAV of $7 million in each of those seasons. This deal works out for both parties and it would be smart for Leafs GM Brad Treliving to keep an eye on it.
In 2018, Tavares came home to Toronto on a humongous 7-year contract, worth a large $11 million per year. It was a high price to pay, but Tavares has not let the Leafs down at all in the five years he has been a Leaf. But now that he is running up on the last two years of that contract, they got to start thinking about extending him if they want to keep him around.
What to do with Tavares?
With Tavares getting up there in age, he should consider taking a little bit of a pay cut in order to stick around in Toronto due to the lack of flexibility with the team's salary. Looking off of Kopitar's extension, Leafs fans should not be surprised to see Johnny T get a very similar contract.
