Report: Calgary Flames Playing Hardball in Trade Discussions with Maple Leafs for Chris Tanev

The Maple Leafs are looking to improve their defense early into the season and their is one defenseman heavy on the sights and he belongs to the Calgary Flames.

Chris Tanev has declined a contract extension with the Flames and it seems the outcome will be a trade for the two parties and the Leafs are looking to add Tanev to their roster.

The belief is the Leafs tried to acquire both Zadorov and Tanev in a trade from the Flames, however a wrench was thrown into those plans as Zadorov was traded to Vancouver.

The Leafs still seem to be pushing for Tanev but according to the Ottawa Sun's Bruce Garrioch the price may be higher for the Leafs than any other team.

"The belief among league executives is Flames owner Murray Edwards is 'no hurry' to help Treliving and the Leafs. The two sides couldn't get the package deal with Zadorov done and the sense is, if Toronto really wants Tanev, the club has to be willing to pay. 'That may be higher than it is for some teams,' a league executive said." - Bruce Garrioch, Ottawa Sun

The attention from the Leafs may have to switch to other names available for trade if the price does not come down.

The Sharks who are clear cut in full rebuild mode do have one very good stay-at-home defenseman in Mario Ferraro who may be available for trade.

The other two names out there are the Philadelphia Flyers Sean Walker and Rasmus Ristolainen who are also available for trade that would not require the Leafs to have to overpay to acquire.

There will be more names available as we get later into the season, but for right now it seems like just four names are available for the Leafs to improve their defense.
