Considering the Red Wings didn't send their top players to the game, many people believed the Leafs would crush them, but the Wings offered a great performance against Toronto.
However, even if it wasn't the beating that fans anticipated, two things gave us hope for the start of the regular season.
First, the Leafs' big guns took their responsibilities seriously and managed to make a difference. The Core Four tallied a total of seven points together (three goals and four assists).
It was great to see them perform as they're expected to.
Second, Fraser Minten was once again very impressive. Even Sheldon Keefe noticed it.
Game after game, since the training camp started, Fraser Minten, 19, was one of the most consistent players on the ice. He scored one goal and had four assists in five games, but his impact is bigger than that.
Reporter Jonas Siegel highlighted that Fraser won 78% of his faceoffs last night. This places him above the NHL's elite in that category.
Luke Fox also shared that Minten will play again this weekend, for the last pre-season game. If he continues to play well, don't be surprised if he starts the season with the Leafs or gets called up during the year.
With Minten performing well in the center's position, this allows William Nylander to remain on John Tavares' wing, increasing his chances of having a 100-point season.
