When the Toronto Maple Leafs signed free agent John Tavares to a seven-year deal in the summer of 2018, Leafs Nation was ecstatic with the joy of Tavares potentially helping bring a Stanley Cup to Toronto.
Leafs Fans No Longer Have Faith In Their Captain
However, unfortunately for the Maple Leafs, that hasn't been the case. The team's second-round loss to the Florida Panthers this year is the closest they have come to playoff success under Tavares' captaincy.
Tavares Unable To Lead Leafs To Cup
Currently, Tavares has two years remaining on his contract, which pays him $11 million annually and includes a full no-movement clause.
To potentially explore a trade involving Tavares, Maple Leafs General Manager Treliving would need to ask Tavares to waive his no-movement clause and likely have to retain 50% of his salary. Alternatively, considering that Tavares will be 35 years old when his massive contract ends, there might be hope of signing him to a hometown discount deal.
Treliving Maybe Forced To Keep Tavares
Overall, the initial excitement surrounding Tavares' signing has diminished, and fans no longer view him as a desirable player for the team.
