While it is all but confirmed that Brad Treliving will be the next GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs, fans want to know what they are getting in Treliving.
While he is an apparent downgrade compared to Kyle Dubas, he is not a downgrade in all facets. He is a major upgrade compared to the worst part of Dubas.
Dubas is a very smart individual but he found himself getting bullied by agents regarding contracts resulting in either drama or overpayments with each core four member's contract.
William Nylander held out on his contract which ends after next season. John Tavares is getting paid $11 million and while he is a good player, he is not worth 8 figures a year.
Auston Matthews is worth what he gets paid but his contract walked him directly to unrestricted free agency and he could potentially leave next year.
Finally, Mitch Marner is getting paid $10.9 million a year which is less than ideal, especially for a contract of less than 8 years.
Of the core fours contracts, only John Tavares received max term while the rest signed shorter deals that take them to free agency earlier.
Enter Brad Treliving. He is one of the best GMs at negotiating having negotiated many long-term contracts and trades.
An anonymous agent praised Treliving's negotiating skills to give Leafs fans an idea of what they're getting with him.
This could be good news and bad news at the same time. Treliving will not be afraid to trade a core four member if he senses they want out not wanting a repeat of last summer with Gaudreau walking and Matt Tkachuk requesting a trade.
It will be intriguing to see what he can do and if he is not able to sign a big piece, expect a league-altering trade.
As seen on Maple Leafs Daily -
Don't look now, but Kyle Dubas may have pivoted AGAIN and lost another GM job
