Calgary Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar may be available this summer, making himself an intriguing option for Brad Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Calgary Flames certainly have entered a new era as they appeared to begin a rebuild last season. Several key players including Elias Lindholm, Chris Tanev, and Nikita Zadorov were all shipped off to new teams. With that being said, it seems like the sell off will likely continue over the next couple of seasons. One player that could be on the move is veteran defenseman MacKenzie Weegar.

MacKenzie Weegar is a player to keep an eye on. 30 year old defenseman playing elite level hockey with 20 goals and 52 points last year. On an incredibly palatable 6.25m AAV contract until 2028. A player Calgary could get a great return for, and many teams would kill to have 👀

This has lead to much speculation about what the Flames will do with Weegar next season. Several fanbases have become excited at the possibility of adding Weegar to their teams.

Notably, Weegar is right handed, a rare commodity on the trade market. That will certainly increase his trade value. Furthermore, he is on a very reasonable contract, which carries a 6.25 million dollar cap hit for the next four years.

This could make him a very intriguing option for Brad Treliving, who could be looking to add to his blueline this summer.

Weegar smashed his career high in goals last season with 20. He also set a career high in points with 52. In total, he has 469 games of NHL experience and has 51 goals and 204 points.

What is would cost to acquire him remains unclear, but he certainly would not come cheap. Perhaps a player like Timothy Liljegren could be part of the package going the other way.
