After being eliminated from the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs Toronto Maple Leafs fans were starving for change. Another first-round exit had fans expecting major overhauls to both the staff and the roster. The first change came with the hiring of head coach Craig Berube.
After his hiring the speculation began on the roster changes. After a disappointing playoff performance, many fans were hoping Mitch Marner would be traded. For weeks heading into the offseason rumors began about his future. Just after Craig Berube was hired however, he and Mitch Marner met in a coffee shop. At the time reports had not come out confirming what the meeting was about but today Craig Berube spoke about that meeting with Mitch Marner in depth.
Recently Craig Berube spoke to the Toronto media about the upcoming 2024-25 NHL season. One of the first questions he was asked was about his relationship with Mitch Marner at this point in the offseason.
He was then asked a follow-up question about the infamous meeting between himself and Mitch Marner in the coffee shop. He was specifically asked if he was surprised the meeting was leaked to the public through the photos taken.
In his answer, Craig Berube admitted he was not surprised or offended that someone decided to take a photo of them together and that he was just focused on building a relationship with Mitch Marner.
For a team playing in such a large market, this is a great response from Craig Berube. He handles the pressure without letting anyone around him impact how he builds relationships or coaches his team. In Toronto that will be key regardless of who is on the roster.
As the offseason continues it seems more and more likely that the Toronto Maple Leafs will be bringing back Mitch Marner and running it back with the same forward group at the top. This means that despite the lack of change Craig Berube will need to earn his contract and get something out of the Maple Leafs that Sheldon Keefe could not.
