Bertuzzi and Domi could face consequences of Brad Treliving's free agency plans
Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi could face the consequences of Brad Treliving's free agency plans for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Leafs management has clear plans to revamp their blue line on the free agent and trade markets over the summer. Unfortunately, they'll be limited by the salary cap. If they prioritize defensemen over forwards, Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi could be paying the price.
That's what Jonas Siegel and James Mirtle of The Athletic believe. Here's what they wrote in a recent paper:
"The Leafs aren't against bringing Bertuzzi and Domi back but want to keep the bulk of their cap space available heading into July 1st for defense. Their return to Toronto may hinge on being able to circle back after the initial wave of UFA signings takes place around the league on Monday."
Even if Domi, Bertuzzi, and Treliving all expressed their wishes to renew their association, both players will likely need to accept lower salaries to remain in Toronto.
With Treliving agreeing on a three-year contract extension with goaltender Joseph Woll earlier this week, the GM already has less room to navigate under the salary cap to make key acquisitions this summer.
Regardless of what happens, we should know where Bertuzzi and Domi spend the 2024-25 NHL season in the coming weeks.
