NHL Insider Darren Dreger has provided a huge update regarding Mitch Marner's future with the Maple Leafs.

With all the questions surrounding whether or not Mitch Marner is staying a Toronto Maple Leaf or not, the clock is ticking for Brad Treliving to get some type of deal sorted out; or figure out if Marner is moving on.

NHL Insider Darren Dreger revealed on TSN 1050's FirstUp show that with time winding down for a decision, it's time for the Leafs to put the pressure on Marner:

Look, Brad Treliving as GM he doesn't have to play by the rules of Darren Ferris, the agent.

He can go directly to Mitch, he can go to Ferris and say 'I need an answer. We need to get into negotiations. I've been very patient in waiting, and we didn't want to disrupt Marner, we want his focus to be on playing.'

I don't believe you'll have certainty by the 7th of March [trade deadline day], but the GM can put pressure on the player and GM.

Is it time for the Maple Leafs to put the onus on Marner and Ferris?

It's going to be crunch time and frankly, a miracle for the Maple Leafs if they can get an answer out of Marner.

Completely focused on trying to help Toronto win, the team has done their best to not bother him during a career year, but something's gotta give. Marner, for him wanting to stay a Leaf isn't giving them much leeway.

Ferris doesn't help things in that regard, as the hardball-playing agent is often trying to squeeze teams for every last penny (and fill his pockets a bit more too).

Marner has been lights out this season, with 16 goals and 55 assists in 55 games while being the team's unquestionable MVP. He certainly has earned a pay raise, and Toronto needs to get over their internal salary cap dramatics.

But there's two and a half months left in the regular season, and that time is not going to slow down anytime soon. Marner has a new family that he needs to be concerned about too; does he really wanna move across the continent?

It's time for both parties to stop playing coy with each other, sit down and nail out a game plan whether it involves Marner staying; or not.
