Evgeny Kuznetsov Rips Maple Leafs Fans and Media for Treatment of Ilya Samsonov's Mental Health
The Toronto Maple Leafs lost in epic fashion last night against the Carolina Hurricanes. Former teammates Evgeni Kuznetsov and Ilya Samsonov talked about facing each other prior to the matchup.
Hurricanes Forward Calls Out Toronto Media For Unfair Treatment Of Former Teammate
Kuznetsov was rather serious in his talking points. He called out the hockey media in Toronto for their treatment of Samsonov. He believes that they have been unfairly harsh on him this season and that he is still a quality NHL goaltender, with the best part of his career still ahead of him.
Kuznetsov on close friend Samsonov:
You guys been so hard on players, in general, here over time. I'm so happy that he doesn't speak English well so he doesn't understand everything & that's huge for him ... I believe his best games are ahead of him
Samsonov, on the other hand, was much more relaxed with his comments about facing his friend and countryman.
Samsonov Addresses Facing Former Teammate Kuznetsov
He specifically noted how he would do his best to prevent the Russian center from showcasing his classic goal celebration. Kuznetsov has become known for doing an 'eagle' celebration by standing on one leg and flapping his arms like a bird.
Ilya Samsonov on facing close friend Evgeny Kuznetsov:
"I try to give him no chance for the bird (smile) ... Nice opportunity for us, what time you play against your friends. He wants to score on me, I want to make some saves & it will be nice" While the Leafs would lose the game 5-4 in overtime, Samsonov was successful in his efforts to prevent his ole friend from scoring. The Leafs goaltender stopped all three of Kuznetsov's shots on goal. The Hurricanes center did record an assist however.
