Leafs star center Auston Matthews has been given major news ahead of the Four Nations faceoff after his return from injury a few weeks earlier.
After coming back a first time from injury, Matthews re-aggrevated the injury, causing a second bout of missed time and putting his season into question.
Thankfully for Matthews, and the Leafs, the captain was able to return to action shortly after his second absence, once again finding his form after his first return brought mixed results.
Since then, Matthews has been one of the Leafs top players, with nine goals and 15 points in 11 games since returning to Toronto's lineup, with Matthews having 20 goals and 38 points in 36 games this season.
A new honor now awaits Matthews with a chance to win a trophy as a team leader.
Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews has been named as the Captain for Team USA at the 2025 Four Nations Faceoff.
Named as assistant captains to Matthews are Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk and Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy.
