Former Leafs GM Brian Burke reveals the Leafs are about to make a big mistake
The Toronto Maple Leafs have failed to make it deep in the playoffs for some time, and now former GM Brian Burke reveals the big mistake they're about to make.
The past few years in Toronto have been intriguing, as they have had plenty of regular season success, but have struggled to turn that into series wins when it matters most in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Now, reports have emerged from some members of the media that claim stripping John Tavares of the captaincy in Toronto is the way to go, while others believe it's not the right move.
Now, former Maple Leafs General Manager Brian Burke has weighed in, throwing his support behind Tavares as captain, claiming that making the move would be a huge mistake.
«I've had the discussion before and it's such a drastic step. It's admitting you made a mistake in my mind if you put the C' on a guy and take it away. You've seen it happen, it happened in San Jose and it's happened recently. It's not unheard of, but it is unusual,» Burke said.
While Tavares has failed in leading the Maple Leafs past the first round every time but one in 2022/23, he's been a fantastic captain, and has produced on and off the ice in a tough media market.
While Burke continues his support of No. 91, he claims that the rumblings of a move are out there, despite the fact that he wouldn't make the move if he were still in charge in Toronto.
«I wouldn't entertain that discussion. I think John Tavares is a quality player and a good guy. He's earned his money, he's done a good job, he's killed penalties, he's worked on the power play, I think he's a useful guy, he's good in the community. I've heard the rumors though, the rumblings,» Burke added.
It's safe to say that this will be a huge decision for Brad Treliving and the front office, but if they put the right roster on the ice, many believe that Tavares is the player to take them all the way.
