Signing John Tavares was one of the biggest mistakes Kyle Dubas has admitted to making while working as GM for the Toronto Maple Leafs a few years ago.

The Athletic's Craig Custance recently sat down with Kyle Dubas, where it was stated that Dubas regrets one thing he did while working as GM of the Leafs, which was the way he handled the John Tavares free agency situation in 2018.

He admitted this led to some problems while trying to deal with some internal players' contracts.

«The thing I learned was once we signed John to the (AAV) we did, it lifted the lid on the entire ceiling,» Dubas said.

Despite the Leafs dealing with major cap issues during that summer of 2018, similarly to what they are dealing with now, Dubas still pulled the trigger on a huge lucrative $77 million contract for Tavares over seven years. Jaws were dropping everywhere around the league when this signing was announced, as fans wondered why Dubas wasn't handling internal players such as Mitch Marner and William Nylander first.

Dubas has essentially said that John Tavares was overpaid, and that he regrets that signing. Fans in Pittsburgh are hoping Dubas has learnt from his mistake as they have some major contract decisions looming over the next year, and hope he will be able to manage their team's money better.
