Mitch Marner has had a turbulent offseason already since his Toronto Maple Leafs were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Many fans are hoping the hometown superstar is traded before next season.
Now with those rumors continuing to pick up a new report from NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has addressed his future. Mitch Marner's contract is set to expire after this season. According to Pierre LeBrun, the two sides do not have interest in currently working on an extension.
This puts the Toronto Maple Leafs in an interesting position. As of a couple of weeks ago the Toronto Maple Leafs had not discussed a trade involving Mitch Marner with any other teams.
If the plan was not to re-sign Mitch Marner but also not to trade him either then what is the long-term goal? It seems as though at the moment the Maple Leafs are content to run it back with the same group and treat Mitch Marner as a rental piece.
As the offseason continues this all could change but at the moment the Maple Leafs look to be taking a big risk with Mitch Marner.
