Insider wants Maple Leafs to trade $77 million player for Sidney Crosby
The Maple Leafs have shown they aren't afraid to make a blockbuster move, and now one insider has urged them to make the biggest of all to land Sidney Crosby.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been on the verge of a deep Stanley Cup run for some time now, but after another first-round exit, the time for them to make a bold moves grows closer by the year.
Now, TSN's Bryan Hayes has a shocking suggestion for the Maple Leafs in free agency, and it may be just crazy enough to work.
«If [Crosby] is going to wait it out, play his final year, and hit free agency next year, [then he should sign with] the Toronto Maple Leafs it doesn't get bigger than that in the hockey world,» Hayes said. «Maybe the greatest Canadian captain of all time, or real close to it, with Wayne Gretzky, with Mark Messier, with Mario Lemieux.
«One of the great winners of all time. Golden goal in 2010. Come home, come to Canada, end the Canadian Cup drought as a Maple Leaf. [John] Tavares leaves, Sid comes in. It all works out for everybody.»
On paper, the move makes perfect sense for the Maple Leafs, as they would get a Canadian captain that's done it all in the NHL and on the international stage, and if John Tavares can't lead them deep in the playoffs this season, he'll likely be out anyway. After two decades with the team, there's no contract extension in place for Sidney Crosby, and unless the Penguins take a huge step forward in 2024/25, a move makes sense for No. 87, so keep a close eye on the situation.
