Joel Edmundson announces plans for July 1st: Maple Leafs await key decision
This afternoon a new report has confirmed that the Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to potentially lose out on defenseman Joel Edmundson in free agency.
This season Joel Edmundson brought stability to the Toronto Maple Leafs defensive group. He came to the Toronto Maple Leafs after a trade with the Washington Capitals and played well.
TRADE: We've acquired defenceman Joel Edmundson from the Washington Capitals
Now with Joel Edmundson's contract ending many around the league wondered what the next step was for each side. The Maple Leafs reportedly have interest in bringing Joel Edmundson back but he would prefer to test the free-agent market according to insider David Pagnotta.
The Leafs have also expressed interest in re-signing Joel Edmundson, however I'm told the rugged defenseman plans on testing free agency next month. He is open to returning to Toronto, but he wants to explore his options before deciding his future.
This likely means if the Toronto Maple Leafs and Brad Treliving are going to keep Joel Edmundson in Toronto they will have to win a bidding war. With Joel Edmundson about to turn 31, the Toronto Maple Leafs will likely want to keep the term of the contract low. This could lead to a massive overpay in salary to keep him in blue and white heading into next season.
With free agency less than a month away this story will continue to develop. Once there is more news regarding the future of Joel Edmundson we will provide the latest updates.
