One the best surprises of the year in the Leafs organization has been watching Cowen dominating in the OHL this season.
Many people were shocked to see the Leafs draft Cowen in the first round, after experts predicted his selection late in the second round. However, he showed them wrong and won the Red Tilson Trophy, awarded to the "OHL's Most Outstanding Player".
Interestingly, Cowen became the first Knights player to win the trophy since Mitch Marner in 2016.
After a career-high tally of 34 goals and 62 assists, Cowen ended up winning the OHL Cup. In the playoffs, he scored 34 points in only 18 games and got the chance to represent the OHL at the Memorial Cup.
His team eventually lost in the Finals against the Saginaw Spirit.
In a new post on Instagram, Cowen gave us a hint about his plans for the next season. He wished good luck to his teammates who are moving on, which probably means he'll remain in the OHL for another season:
At 19 years old, Cowen could be moved up to the AHL and play with the Marlies. He's already under contract with the Maple Leafs, and the organization will need to make a decision on his future. Either they give him a chance to break records in the OHL for another year, or they move him up to the AHL. It should all depend on his performances during the next training camp.
