A new segment on the First Up Podcast has revealed a shocking turn of events in the Mitch Marner saga indicating that the Maple Leafs would prefer to keep Mitch Marner.

The Toronto Maple Leafs failed to make it out of the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs after a loss to the Boston Bruins. The loss sent fans into a tirade that eventually got head coach Sheldon Keefe fired. In their anger many fans also wanted Mitch Marner to be traded.
Reports over the last several weeks indicated that a trade was going to be coming this summer. Insider Frank Seravalli went as far as to say the Maple Leafs were looking to push Mitch Marner out.
I think the Leafs are going to make a play and basically back him into a corner over the next three weeks, saying, 'Mitch, it's been great, but we're moving on. So whether it's now or eight months from now, your time's up

Today a new interview involving insider Darren Dreger has thrown this whole narrative in a blender. New reports are linking Mitch Marner to an extension in Toronto.

Darren Dreger believes the Maple Leafs want to extend Mitch Marner

During a segment on the First Up Podcast, Darren Dreger joined to talk about various hockey topics. Mitch Marner's name came up and Darren Dreger believes it is Mitch Marner who wants to leave even though the Maple Leafs want to extend him.
From the conversations I've had, Marner wants to play out his contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs," he said. "He's got one year left. That doesn't mean he's going to leave after next season. Of course, there's a risk since he'd become a free agent, but Marner negotiated his deal, including the no-move clause, in good faith.

And are we sure Toronto doesn't want to extend Mitch? I think Treliving would rather extend than trade, but those discussions haven't started yet. It's still early days.

With this quote, everything we thought we knew about the Mitch Marner situation has changed. The Maple Leafs could continue to have their extension talks with Mitch Marner but if he doesn't want to sign it sounds as though the Maple Leafs might just keep him as a rental.
The NHL offseason is just beginning and as more reports and moves are made pertaining to this situation and Mitch Marner we will continue to update you.
