Leafs top prospect Artur Akhtyamov wins goalie of the year
Today Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Artur Akhtyamov has been given a prestigious award for his incredible success during the 2023-24 season.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have struggled to find consistent goaltending on their NHL roster. Today prospect Artur Akhtyamov has given the organization hope for the future. He was awarded the VHL Goaltender of the Year award in the second division of Russian hockey just below the KHL.
#LeafsForever Artur Akhtyamov is the VHL Goaltender of the Year
Last month Artur Akhtyamov and his team Neftyanik won the VHL championship. In the playoffs Artur Akhtyamov was one of the driving forces for his team's success.
#LeafsForever prospect Artur Akhtyamov stopped 41 of 43 shots he faced to clinch the VHL championship! Neftyanik as the 9th seed swept the finals 4-0.
Akhtyamov finishes the playoff run with a 16-5 record and a .932 sv%. He got some big hugs from his team.
KING ARTUR!
Now Artur Ahktyamov will likely take the next step in the 2024-25 season playing for a KHL club. If his success translates to that level we could see him come over to Toronto as soon as the end of next season.
This would be a huge relief for the Maple Leafs as they would only need to find a stopgap goaltender before he and fellow prospect Dennis Hildeby might be ready to take the reigns.
