Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube stands firm on Mitch Marner comments
New Leafs head coach Craig Berube recently made comments on how he would love to coach Mitch Marner, and once again affirmed those comments.
During the NHL draft a few weeks ago, Berube made some comments on how he was looking forward to being able to coach a player like Marner. That led to many people to believe that Marner would no longer be at risk of being traded and that all major core players would be returning to Toronto next season.
Berube recently sat down with The Star's Kevin McGran, and he re-confirmed the comments he made a few weeks ago, stating that yes Marner will be on the Leafs roster come training camp.
"(Marner is) a character guy," Berube told McGran. "He's a great person. Obviously, a great player. I'm looking forward to coaching him."
Brad Treliving, GM of the Leafs, has not confirmed or denied any of the Marner rumors, however for those reading in between the lines, he doesn't seem as confident that Marner will be on the Leafs as long as Matthews or Nylander.
Leafs fans remember last season when Treliving stated that his priority was to sign those two players to long-term contracts, however he never mentioned anything similar about Marner.
Lots of quotes on what Treliving said about Marner today. Here's video of what he said & how he looked when he said it! Pretty standard stuff here. What I DIDN'T hear was «our priority is to keep Mitch a Leaf for a very long time!» IMO- it's on the table! #Leafs #Leafsforever
As the season goes on, and should Marner still be a member of the Leafs, it will be interesting to see Berube's coaching style, and whether players like Marner feel they enjoy it and want to be part of the Leafs long-term.
