The Toronto Maple Leafs have a solid prospect group built through the draft in recent years, but unfortunately, not all of those names are going to work out in the NHL, or even make it to the next level.

Rodion Amirov

Unfortunately, sometimes life gets in the way, as is the case for 2019 first-round pick Rodion Amirov, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2022, before heading to Germany to get treatment.

Devastatingly, according to a Maple Leafs insider, Amirov's career may be over, despite how quiet Toronto themselves have been around the issue over the past year.

A devastating update

When asked if he will play again, the Insider revealed that while he did extend his loan with Salavat Yulaev UFA in May, it appears to be so that he can simply continue getting treatment and remain in Russia with the staff.

At this point, it appears unlikely he's going to return to the KHL, and his career at this point is likely over, so we wish the best for Amirov and hopefully he can overcome the odds and step on the ice once more.
