It's been an up and down career for Matt Murray so far. Since being drafted by the Penguins and earning himself two Stanley Cups, he struggled throughout the years since. He found a bit of a resurgence in Toronto in 2022, but injuries have derailed him for over a year.
Since then he's had major hip surgery, and the outlook for Murray to make a return to the NHL is positive, and with the injury to Anthony Stolarz, and Dennis Hildeby's inconsistency; it could be time for Murray to make his come back.
Having not played an NHL game since April 2023, Matt Murray has dealt with some serious and potential career-threatening injuries.
Undergoing hip surgery and finally recovering to be able to return this season, Toronto re-signed Murray as he found his way back to the ice. While he hasn't been the star he was previous, Murray has been able to provide a veteran backup for rookies Dennis Hildeby and Artur Ahktyamov.
But he also has a chance to help Toronto in a big way, much like he has in he past. With Anthony Stolarz out injured for the next 4-6 weeks, it's the perfect time for Murray to return according to NHL Insider Chris Johnston:
It would be great for Toronto to have Murray healthy and available considering Joseph Woll's injury history as well as Dennis Hildeby's inconsistency. Murray in his short time with the Leafs has been very solid in an emergency role.
He's gone 14-8-2 with a 3.01 GAA and .903 SV% with the Maple Leafs but holds a career record of 146-86-24 with a 2.79 GAA and .910 SV% with time spent between Pittsburgh, Ottawa, and Toronto.
It will be great to see Murray back in action after such a long absence, and if he can help keep Toronto's momentum rolling at one of the most crucial times of the season, it will only make his return that much more important to not only the team, but to Murray.
