With Toronto leading 1-0 towards the end of the first period, Max Pacioretty got tangled up with the Canadiens' Michael Matheson and fell awkwardly before grabbing his hamstring. He skated to the bench and did not return to the ice.
It's a rough turn for Pacioretty who was turning it around lately, anchoring Toronto's newly revamped second line with John Tavares and William Nylander.
With Toronto already down captain Auston Matthews due to his placement on the IR, and him unable to return until at least Tuesday, losing Pacioretty for any period of time would be a huge blow to the Maple Leafs, especially since they've just started to gain momentum.
The Maple Leafs updated fans that unfortunately, Pacioretty will not be returning to the game:
Already hurt and scratched twice this season, it's another bump in the road as Pacioretty is trying to revive his career after two serious Achilles injuries.
While he hasn't scored a ton this season, Pacioretty did open the season's scoring for the Maple Leafs, and has 2 goals and 4 assists for the team. Being placed on a line with John Tavares and William Nylander has revitalized the 35-year old, as he's hitting more, and doing everything Toronto needs.
Toronto will need to rely on their other pieces as they head into the rest of the game against the Montreal Canadiens, but are doing a fine job so far; leading 2-0 in the second period with goals from Conor Timmins and William Nylander.
More to come.
