For all of the Toronto Maple Leafs' success this season, a lot of credit could be handed to William Nylander. The Swedish superstar has been one of the team's best players and has shown why he can be one of the NHL's most elite goal scorers.
But he's been in a slump recently, not having scored for eight games before finally lighting the lamp against Carolina.
It was not a pretty stretch for Nylander, and luckily for Toronto they held it down thanks to Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies exploding for the offense.
So it's not surprising that Craig Berube decided to have a pep talk with the winger, and some information regarding that meeting shows what Berube comes to expect of Nylander.
William Nylander broke his scoring drought against Carolina and looked more urgent compared to his previous games.
According to Luke Fox of Sportsnet, Berube urged the forward to work for his chances, not wait.
For what it's worth it seems like getting the monkey off his back can only lead to go things for Nylander, as he commented after the game regarding his slump-breaker:
It's great that it's Hakuna Matata for Nylander, but it didn't shake off a dismal showing from the Maple Leafs.
Both Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner were minus-6 and performed terribly, so perhaps Berube should have a chit chat with them as well.
Toronto needs Nylander and company to bounce back in a big way as their next game is against a hungry Vancouver team who is trying to weather some pretty big storms when it comes to their roster, and will want to make a statement against the Maple Leafs.
This season, Nylander has 24 goals and 20 assists in 43 games even with his slight bump in the road.
