Mitch Marner could be moved to make room for Jake Guentzel in Toronto
It was announced early last week that pending UFA Jake Guentzel is testing the open market on July 1st instead of extending with the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Carolina Hurricanes made a splash this past trade deadline by acquiring the Pittsburgh Penguins star forward. Guentzel put up an impressive 77 points in 67 games this season combined with the Penguins and Hurricanes.
Even though he appeared to be the perfect fit in Carolina, as he put up 25 points in 17 games, and amassed another 9 points in 11 playoff games, Guentzel will test free agency this summer for the first time in his career.
This summer, will be the first time Jake Guentzel will ever be an NHL free agent after spending his whole career in Pittsburgh.
Toronto Maple Leafs could make room for Jake Guentzel by moving Mitch Marner
The Toronto Maple Leafs can perhaps trade Mitch Marner this summer to make room for top pending UFA forward Jake Guentzel.
They can turn it around from a bad apple to a juicy one by deciding to finally let go of forward Mitch Marner this summer in a blockbuster trade. With the new and improved cap space, the Leafs can make a pitch and offer a contract to former Penguin Jake Guentzel.
Guentzel would immediately add another goal scoring threat to the Six alongside Auston Matthews. A line of Guentzel-Matthews-Nylander can essentially be the best line in the National Hockey League.
