Toronto Maple Leafs' star Mitch Marner was placed on the Injury Reserve a week ago now and Sheldon Keefe just shared an unfortunate update concerning his recovery.

Maple Leafs Head Coach Sheldon Keefe Reveals That Mitch Marner's Injury is More Serious Than Initially Believed

Last week, when Marner's name appeared on the IR, his status was day-to-day. According to Sheldon Keefe, it's a bit more serious than that.

Yesterday, the coach confirmed that Marner won't play today against the Carolina Hurricanes, missing his third consecutive game, as he's dealing with a "mild high-ankle sprain".

"Return from high ankle sprains in the NHL is highly variable with a median of 8 games missed (range, 0-65 games)"

Per Mark Masters:

"Mitch Marner (ankle) remains OUT for tomorrow's game against the Carolina Hurricanes

But the winger was back on the ice yesterday & skated again today, per coach Sheldon Keefe"

Is Mitch Marner's injury still considered a day-to-day thing?

Sheldon Keefe: "It's more than that at this point. He won't skate tomorrow & then we have a day off so a couple of days for him to settle & sort of ramp it back up for next week"

Even if the Leafs performed well without him, securing two wins against the Montreal Canadiens and the Flyers, his teammates surely miss him on the ice.

We should know soon if he's able to come back for the Leafs' game against the Philadelphia Flyers, next Tuesday.

Stay tuned for further developments.

As seen on Hockey Feed - Marner injury more serious than initially reported.
