After starting the 2025 season off strong, the Maple Leafs have lost two in a row in convincing fashion, their latest being a brutal 3-0 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night.
The team was sloppy, couldn't capitalize on their chances, were careless in their own end, and their powerplay once again became a cause of concern, which means that a big change could be coming if things don't turn around.
Craig Berube was upset, so was Chris Tanev. But one player who didn't seem to read the room was Mitch Marner, and his comments about how the Leafs played has not sat well with fans and he's getting some pretty fiery backlash for it.
If you were to ask the majority of the locker room, they would have said the loss sucked, and it was a big punch to the gut to be shutout by a team who only had a few hours to get ready thanks to a weather delay. But Marner seems to have seen something everyone else didn't:
How quickly he's forgotten the Leafs have been outscored 9-3 in the last two games.
Sure, teams can be given credit for their ability to put pucks past the Leafs goaltenders but has it really been hard recently? Toronto's defense has been sloppy, they aren't as aggressive, and just being too complacent in their own end.
Fans weren't happy with his comments either, and Marner could have lost a lot of the respect he's earned through his play this season.
Polarizing sportswriter Steve Simmons also chimed in, and while he's known for poking the bear at times, it's hard to argue his point that Marner wasn't thinking straight when he made those comments.
You can't solely blame Marner for all of their issues, and he's been Toronto's best player. But to be so unaware of how everyone else feels about the loss and to think bring shutout is a positive is frankly, a weird way of thinking.
Marner this season has 14 goals and 45 points, and will get the chance to get the team back on track when they face the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night.
