Kadri signed a seven-year, 49 million dollar contract with the Flames in the summer of 2022, immediately after he won a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche. At the time, the Flames looked like they may very well be a contending team for years to come, so there was little fuss about the deal.
However, things have rapidly deteriorated in Calgary as the team now appears to be heading more for a rebuild than anything else. Could this be enough motivation to get Kadri to leave the team?
David Pagnotta thinks so, especially if the right trade partner is involved. Interestingly, Pagnotta even suggests that the Avalanche could be a good fit for him.
With all of that being said, this is directly in conflict with what Kadri told reporters during his end of season exit interview. After the Flames were eliminated at the end of the regular season, the forward revealed that he would like to see out the end of his contract in Calgary.
Granted, players are allowed to change their minds. Kadri has had several weeks now to think about his future in the NHL, and perhaps something in his mind has changed. Perhaps he is driven to win again, and doesn't think the Flames can do that in the short term.
Perhaps his family is not happy in Calgary. Who knows what could be going through his head? That being said, this is still just a rumor, so perhaps he isn't even planning on leaving Calgary at all.
Regardless of what he chooses, the Flames have suddenly become a team to watch again thanks to this rumor. Could they make another splash this summer? Stick around to find out.
