It's not going to be an easy task for Brad Treliving to make a trade for the Maple Leafs as not only is he losing out on some pretty solid options, but his lack of true assets really make it an uphill battle.
But one name that has always been bounced around has been Nick Robertson as a potential trade piece. He's been linked to several teams and is more than likely on the way out, and one team has emerged that has exactly what Toronto needs.
In his updated trade watch, The Fourth Period's Dave Pagnotta has some updated rankings regarding potential trade pieces, and Robertson is ranked 24th with Pagnotta linking him to the Ducks:
If Toronto wants an upgrade, then they need to look no further than Mason McTavish. While it's a wild proposition, if there's anyone who can make an impact for Toronto it's the former Top 3 pick.
McTavish brings great offensive upside and this season has 12 goals and 14 assists (which would put him at seventh on the team in goals and sixth in points.
Only 23, the 6'0, 213 pound McTavish offers everything Craig Berube and Brad Treliving need in a premium addition. He plays both power play and the penalty kill, doesn't mind throwing down the gloves, is a high-volume shooter, and is elite on the faceoff.
The deal is going to cost Toronto however, and though it's something fans won't necessarily enjoy, it will cost them more than just Robertson.
A potential deal for the Maple Leafs could look something like this:
To Toronto Maple Leafs:
(C) Mason McTavish
To Anaheim Ducks
(F) Nicholas Robertson
(F) Easton Cowan
2026 1st Round Pick
Yes it hurts to see Cowan be included, but you have to realize that he's still unknown in terms of his NHL ability, and McTavish is young, a proven NHLer already, and is a restricted free agent at the end of the year.
If Toronto is able to lock him and Matthew Knies up for the foreseeable future, they have a solid youth core that still includes Fraser Minten and Nikita Grebenkin in their forward group (not to mention William Nylander, Auston Matthews, and potentially Mitch Marner still).
Toronto's pick isn't going to really matter especially if they are in win now mode, and it'll be anywhere from mid to late twenties at best, and last at worst.
Robertson gives Anaheim an NHL ready player who has the potential to be a big star, and the chance to play with Cutter Gauthier, Beckett Sennecke, and Nathan Gaucher in the future is a tasty proposition for a player looking for an offensive outburst.
It's definitely a trade that would benefit both sides. Toronto gets a young, proven, and high-ceiling center that they desperately need, while Anaheim grows stronger with their prospects, add a premium draft pick and could have a diamond in the rough with Robertson.
Though as we've seen lately, anything can happen.
