During the Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Montreal Canadiens preseason game on Saturday night, Canadiens forward Patrik Laine suffered a gruesome injury after being on the receiving end of a knee on knee collision with the Maple Leafs' Cedric Pare. It was a terrible injury that forced Laine to leave the game needing assistance, and it's just one of several Canadiens injuries that occurred Saturday night against Toronto.
A lot of Montreal Canadiens fans, coaches and personalities are calling for more justice for Laine, including former Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban who took to social media in order to plead a case for Laine and it's understandable why. But it seems the NHL has given an indication of what they intend to do, and Montreal fans are not happy with the fact the league has done nothing and looks to continue to do nothing regarding the hit on Laine.
The fact the league hasn't done anything in regards to Pare, but have no issues fining Arber Xhekaj is a bit puzzling. Even a fine or one game suspension for Pare seems reasonable especially if Laine is out long-term which, sadly it looks like. Montreal fans are upset, hockey fans are upset, and it's unfortunate for Pare; who clearly did not intend to go out and hurt Laine but ends up receiving a lot of hate for it. While it wasn't intentional it still needs to be addressed regardless. It rubs fans the wrong way when the league isn't fair in terms of punishments although some may also argue that Xhekaj's fine wasn't enough for his brutal assault on Pare.
The knee on knee hit from Pare on Laine was not a good look for anyone, and Pare while he didn't intend to do it, needs to get some repercussions especially if Laine is seriously hurt. It's not the best solution, but it's better than nothing.
