During a recent media availability, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ryan Reaves admitted he has been healthy for weeks. This came as a shock to many people because Reaves remains on injured reserve.
These comments from Reaves have caused speculation that the move to keep him on injured reserve is a calculated salary cap-saving move. Reaves has been out of the lineup since December 14th with his supposed injury. If proven true the Maple Leafs could be in some serious trouble.
If the Maple Leafs are investigated for the comments made by Reaves big trouble could follow. This is the first time the Maple Leafs have been accused of circumventing the salary cap however other teams like the Tampa Bay Lightning have been accused in the past before eventually being cleared of wrongdoing.
Circumvention of the salary cap is often hard to prove which leads to teams being able to get away with plenty. However, a player admitting he is healthy while on injured reserve could be enough evidence to lead to trouble.
As of now, there is no investigation into the Toronto Maple Leafs or Ryan Reaves. This remains a developing story and if an investigation does begin we will provide updates along the way. For now, Reaves remains out of the lineup awaiting clearance from the team.
