Reaves was asked about McCabe by Leafs reporter Luke Fox. His response was quite revealing, as he went into detail about McCabe's game, complimenting the 30-year-old defenseman in a number of ways.
McCabe has never really been known as a serious threat to create offense, but that changed a bit this year. The veteran blueliner recorded career highs in goals, points, plus/minus, shot attempts, and hits. His eight goals doubled his previous career high of 4, which he hit three times while his 20 assists came just two shy of his career high in that category. He also recorded a career-high three game-winners, including what might have been the nicest goal of his career to beat the Senators in overtime in April.
McCabe has one year left on his deal with the Maple Leafs, coming in with a 2 million dollar cap hit. If he plays similarly well next season, the team could very well look to sign him to a generous extension. However, he will be well into his 30s by then, so the term may be limited. Be sure to stay tuned to see how the Leafs defense core changes this offseason as the team looks to upgrade on the blueline. Hopefully though, McCabe will still be playing a top-four role next season. He certainly earned it with his play this year.
