The Maple Leafs may be able to acquire one of the top Colorado Avalanche players due to cap issues. Miles Wood could be on his way to Toronto at a low cost.

The Colorado Avalanche are gearing up for some big changes as their captain, Gabriel Landeskog, gets ready to return after missing the last two seasons due to a serious knee injury that required multiple surgeries. While his comeback is exciting, it also brings some challenges, especially when it comes to managing the team's salary cap.

During Gabriel Landeskog's absence, the Avalanche used his $7 million cap space to strengthen other parts of the team. But with him coming back, they now need to clear an additional $5 million to fit his salary under the cap, as they currently sit over it.

Adding to this tricky situation is the uncertain status of forward Valeri Nichushkin, who entered the NHLPA's player assistance program during last season's playoffs. His $6.1 million cap hit might also need to be considered soon, as he could return at any moment.

With both Gabriel Landeskog and Valeri Nichushkin possibly returning, the Avalanche are facing the tough task of freeing up about $11 million in cap space. This has led to speculation about potential trades, with specific players being at the center of these trade discussions.

One of these players is 28-year-old forward Miles Wood. He was signed by Colorado last offseason to a six-year deal with an AAV of $2.5 million. Despite contributing nine goals and 28 points over 74 games last season, Wood might find himself out of a top-nine role once Gabriel Landeskog returns, making him a possible trade option.

According to Kevin Papetti from The Athletic, Miles Wood could be a good fit for teams needing depth and physicality on the left side, like the Toronto Maple Leafs. Toronto is reportedly looking for replacements after losing Tyler Bertuzzi and with the possibility of also losing disgruntled forward Nick Robertson. Wood's speed, physical play, and penalty-killing skills could be just what the Maple Leafs need. However, the Leafs would need to make some moves to fit Wood's $2.5 million salary under their cap since they only have about $1.275 million available in space right now.

As the season approaches, everyone will be watching to see how the Avalanche handle these cap challenges and whether a trade involving Miles Wood, or someone else happens, to make room for Gabriel Landeskog and Valeri Nichushkin. The decisions made in the next few weeks could have a big impact on the Avalanche's roster and their chances for another deep playoff run. The very same could be said about the Leafs, as they still need to tweak their roster in the coming weeks to ensure they have the most success possible during the season. Miles Wood could be their answer.
