The Toronto Maple Leafs re-signed winger Nick Robertson on Tuesday, inking the 22-year-old restricted free agent to a one-year contract with an $875,000 AAV. That ends an extended stalemate that began when Robertson asked for a trade on June 30th. But this deal ultimately sets him up for another bout of restricted free agency next summer.
Last season, Nick Robertson had 14 goals and 27 points in 56 games for the Leafs but made it known he wasn't happy. He played in six of the seven playoff games against the Boston Bruins, failing to score.
According to TSN's Darren Dreger, general manager Brad Treliving checked in on trade possibilities throughout the off-season while keeping in contact with Nick Robertson as well. Dreger added that under new head coach Craig Berube, Robertson could see a bigger role at left wing and have a chance for a fresh start.

Despite the trade request, Treliving publicly maintained earlier in the summer that trading away Nick Robertson wasn't part of the plan.
The Pasadena, California, native was drafted 53rd overall in 2019 and has since suited up for 87 games across four seasons with Toronto, notching 17 goals and 34 points in that span.
