Following a treacherous playoff run with the Maple Leafs a few months ago, Mitch Marner entered the final year of his contract. Since July 1st, he has been eligible to sign an extension. Three weeks have passed, and nothing has happened yet.
Fans are eagerly waiting to see what will happen with the Leafs' 4th overall pick in 2015. Meanwhile, many are voicing their concerns online, including former members of the National Hockey League, such as Mike Rupp.
Rupp played 609 games in the NHL between 2002 and 2014 for the New Jersey Devils, Phoenix Coyotes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, and Minnesota Wild.
In a recent intervention on the NHL Network, Rupp shared his thoughts on the situation surrounding Mitch Marner's contract and his future with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He simply said that Marner will get a raise, but he doesn't know if the Leafs' forward will find it in Toronto or in another organization.
In his own words:
So the only way Mitch Marner stays a Toronto Maple Leaf is if he takes a pay cut!
William Nylander and Auston Matthews both got big extensions. Marner deserves one too.
Speculations and rumors will continue to spread until Brad Treliving makes a move.
Make sure to stay tuned for any further updates.
