The wait is finally over. The Maple Leafs are holding a press conference Monday to officially announce Mats Sundin and John Chayka as the new leadership group running the hockey club, per Steve Simmonds.

Sundin will serve as Vice President of Hockey Operations, bringing the most beloved captain in franchise history back to the organization in a prominent role meanwhile Chayka will be named GM, bringing one of the most analytical driven executive in the sport back to NHL hockey after six years away amid some controversy.
That is the hire the Leafs fans have been waiting for since Brad Treliving was fired on March 30th 2026 and after weeks of interviews, misdirection, and speculation; the Maple Leafs have finally their answer.
Monday’s press conference will arguably be the most important moment for this franchise since drafting Auston Matthews in 2016 and now the rebuild officially has a direction. The names are confirmed. The work begins now.

Sundin restores the identity and Chayka brings the analytics and together they address both problems the Maple Leafs have been unable to fix

Sundin coming in will hopefully harken back to an era that a lot of fans are nostalgic for, and if he can bring in the same style of players that he played with and knows brings success — it could be great things to come in Toronto.
Fans are finally going to get the answer they have been waiting months for, and with the draft lottery staring them in the face it's best to get their ducks in a row with the front office instead of going in with a bit less stability.
The fact that Toronto coveted Sundin so much shows they want to bring back that feeling of pride. Back in the 90s and 2000s you'd have Sundin jerseys being worn with pride, and now it feels like Matthews jerseys are on clearance; there's no excitement behind the team and Mats is here to fix it.
On the opposite end, Chayka is the number-crunching, data-driven face the Maple Leafs have yearned for since Kyle Dubas. They need someone who can take the roster and strip it down to the nuts and bolts and see who works and who doesn't.
He's the guy who will take the advanced numbers of guys like Morgan Rielly and end up bringing in guys who may not have big names or the star power but instead lets their play do the talking.
Coming with a little bit of controversy, it seems like Keith Pelley and company are not too worried about him heading for greener pastures, especially with such a huge market to work with.

Monday’s press conference is the most important moment for this franchise in years and everything that follows depends on what they say

Monday is going to have all eyes on the way Sundin and Chayka present themselves and no doubt Pelley is going to be pressed (pun intended) about his confidence in the decision.
We're going to likely hear a lot about hope and what the team intends to do, and the best start they could do is to start being transparent. We would love to hear some honesty about how bad things were and that there are going to be a wide array of changes.
If we hear more of the same rhetoric from years past it's not going to give anyone any hope for the future. Being up front and saying what needs to be done and how they are going to do it will pay huge dividends in repairing fan trust because that is at an all-time low.
We will see what they have to say and what moves are going to be made but the fact of the matter is that it's Mats Sundin's Maple Leafs once again.
Let's hope #13 ends up being lucky.
