The team has been dealing with injuries on defense all season long. As a result, the team has attempted to get by with depth defenders and AHL callups for large stretches of the season. Now that the trade deadline is just around the corner, the team has begun to make moves to acquire defenders from other teams. One player the team is reportedly interested in is Wild defenseman Zach Bogosian.
Bogosian spent the 2020-21 season with the Leafs where he appeared in 45 games, recording 4 assists and a plus 7 rating.
Since then, he has spent time with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Minnesota Wild, who currently still retain him.
This is not the first move, or potential move, the Leafs have made so far. This comes just days after the team acquired another former Leafs defenseman in Ilya Lyubushkin, whom the team added via a three-team trade involving the Anaheim Ducks and Carolina Hurricanes.
Neither of Lyubushkin or Bogosian figure to be major parts of the team heading into the stretch run, but they do add some much needed injury protection. However, Lyubushkin was injured himself in the Leafs last game after a hit from Rangers rookie Matt Rempe. Luckily, the blueliner participated in morning skate with he team today, indicating that he may not miss any time with the injury at all.
Still though, the team is bound to make larger moves in the coming days. Be sure to stay tuned for when those moves come.
