The move was announced via X this afternoon as the club revealed that they had agreed to terms with McKay on a one-year deal.
McKay spent all of last season playing in a starting role for the Leafs ECHL affiliate, Newfoundland Growlers. In 24 games he put up a 3.33 goals-against-average, an .897 save percentage, and an 8-10-4 record.
In the 2022-23 season he appeared in 33 games for the Growlers where he put up slightly better numbers overall and a much better record of 19-10-1. He also appeared in 2 games with the Toronto Marlies, earning his first career AHL win in the process.
The highlight of McKay's career so far came in the 2021-22 season when he won the Hobey Baker award for the best player in collegiate hockey. That season he put up a .931 save percentage and a miniscule 1.31 goals-against-average to go along with an incredible 38-5-0 record.
McKay is a long shot to ever play in the NHL, especially considering that he is listed at just 6'0", which would be very short for an NHL netminder. Nothing is impossible though as the 26-year-old looks to continue to work his way up the depth charts.
