After injuring himself during a game against the Anaheim Ducks, Anthony Stolarz is expected to be out another month. It's a big blow to the Maple Leafs' momentum and has led to questions about what's next for the team.
It seems now that the Leafs have made their decision regarding the next few games when it comes to their goaltending and it's going to heavily rely on Joseph Woll for the time being.
If the team thought they would have a tough schedule in their rearview mirror, they are going to be greatly disappointed. While there are no back to back games in January, they have a lot of games spread out where they have one day of rest and given the injury situation; that's a bleak future to look forward to.
Asking Joseph Woll to start three of the next four is a lot of weight on the young goaltender but given he is the team's starter of the future it's the best test they can do. If he can give Toronto the type of performances he had earlier this season, they'll be in good hands.
If not, then it's going to be tough as shoe leather.
Matt Murray has been demoted and even if he was up isn't ready to be back in the crease.
Dennis Hildeby has done okay in his short stint but has struggled with the pace of the NHL so far. Artur Ahktyamov is the only goalie left they could try but he's a rookie and asking that much from him could be detrimental to his progress.
Woll has the ability to carry the team for sure, and perhaps this pressure will instead turn him into a diamond instead of having him crumble.
This is arguably his biggest test of his career as not only will his play determine Toronto's start in the New Year; it could be the difference between an easy playoff spot or not.
Joseph Woll and the Maple Leafs will try and finish their 2024 off strong as they take on the New York Islanders on Tuesday afternoon; the game is scheduled to start at 1pm ET.
