The Toronto Maple Leafs forced to make a major change involving Dennis Hildeby after an embarrassing loss.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are coming off a disappointing 5-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets last night, led by a hat trick from Toronto-raised forward Adam Fantilli.

The loss was a difficult and crushing defeat for the Leafs, who have once again shown an example of what has become a recurring theme of high-scoring defeats in the past few games.

Toronto has allowed three or more goals in their last seven games, having a 2-4-1 record in that timespan, and still managing more than three goals in four of those games, the defensive side of the Leafs roster hasn't gotten things done.

Craig Berube had criticism for the Leafs' performance against Columbus , and while having some words for Hildeby, admitted the team needs to be better, understanding the situation the young netminder is in.

Now, the Toronto Maple Leafs have made what some see as a necessary change in net.

Toronto Maple Leafs Urged To Make Urgent Goalie Swap

As the Toronto Maple Leafs have struggled in keeping pucks out of the net, rookie netminder Dennis Hildeby has been sent back to the American Hockey League, with the Leafs calling back up veteran Matt Murray from the Toronto Marlies.

Sportsnet analyst Luke Gazdic said the Toronto Maple Leafs needed to make the change.

Gazdic said the Leafs needed to send Hildeby down and Murray come back up, something now come to fruition a day later.

Hildeby, 23, has a 3-3-0 record with the Leafs, but a struggling 3.33GAA and a .878sv% this season.

Murray, 30, has played in two games for Toronto this season, with a 1-1-0 record for the Leafs, with a 3.54GAA and a .879sv%.

Murray re-signed with Toronto in the offseason after missing the 2023-24 NHL season due to hip surgery.

In the AHL, Murray has been dominant for the Marlies, currently with an 8-4-2 record with a league-leading 1.68GAA and a second-best .934sv% in 15 games played this season.

The Leafs have been in a difficult goaltending situation without Anthony Stolarz, who hasn't played since in December due to injury, and with Murray still in the minors returning from a year away from hockey.

The Leafs now give Murray another chance to prove himself at the NHL level after a major setback nearly ended it for good.
