Toronto Maple Leafs' new 6 foot 6 defenseman Philippe Myers may be a hidden gem
Philippe Myers sign as a free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 1st. What initially seemed as a depth signing is now being perceived as a lot more.
Philippe Myers is one of the tallest players in the NHL, standing at 6 foot 6, prior to putting on skates. Many thought that when GM Brad Treliving signed him this off-season, it was simply to fill out some depth positions. However, Myers may be bringing a lot more than people think to the Leafs.
Asked BriseBois specifically about Philippe Myers and how he's looked in Syracuse.
Myers bring a ton of size to the Leafs at 6 foot 6 and nearly 215 pounds, and is very physical, throwing his big body all over the ice. He is known to be very responsible defensively, and is great at killing penalties. Another reason why this signing could prove to be a hidden gem for the Leafs is due to how little they spent on Myers.
Brad Treliving is only paying Myers $775,000, which is the NHL league minimum. If Myers blossoms into more than just a depth defenseman, this could be one of the biggest steals in NHL history.
The Leafs have signed Dakota Mermis, Philippe Myers and Cedric Pare to one-year contracts. Myers has the skills, size, experience and opportunity to make a huge impact for the Leafs next season. Combine that with his extremely low cap hit, and he's a real diamond in the rough.
