Many experts felt that this type of move was coming after John Tavares just had the worst season since his rookie year, having collected only 65 points in 80 games and there was talk he would be demoted to the third line. According to NHL insider Darren Dreger, he believes that the next captain of the Maple Leafs will be Auston Matthews, and it's expected to be announced as early as tomorrow.
When the announcement eventually gets made on Wednesday, it is no doubt going to be a very odd and uncomfortable situation for John Tavares, as the expectation is that he will be there to speak and welcome Matthews as the team's new leader . TSN reporter Eric Macramalla believes that John Tavares is not happy at all about this but is just putting on a fake face as a PR stunt.
We are likely headed for an awkward few weeks ahead, however once the dust settles and the season begins, this "controversy" will likely be in the rear-view mirror and all Leafs players will be ready to make a deep run towards the goal of winning the Stanley Cup. Handing the captaincy over to Auston Matthews makes sense, as he just came off a career year, having scored a whopping 69 goals and 107 points in 81 games. It may seem harsh, but it will be the right move in the long run.
