The subject of headlines for weeks, when and who Brad Treliving will make a trade for, and one new report has linked two players from one of Toronto's biggest rivals, the Boston Bruins; that being Trent Frederic and Charlie Coyle.
With the Maple Leafs looking to make sure that Boston doesn't end up beating them yet again, the best way to do so is by adding either Frederic or Coyle.
Coyle specifically would be a huge asset as he's been Auston Matthews' Kryptonite, and would be able to give Toronto a shutdown defensive center who can add a bunch of scoring.
This season is a bit of a slower one for Coyle, but he still has 12 goals and 18 points in 48 games but also has 38 blocks and 72 hits and adds a 49.9% faceoff win percentage.
HIs playoff experience though is where things matter. Though he doesn't have outstanding numbers, his 52 points in 119 games is a lot more output than the majority of Maple Leafs currently employed.
One issue is that he holds a no-movement clause in his contract, so not only would he need to give the 'Okay' but GM Cam Neely has to decide whether he wants to help out a Division rival.
Frederic has been linked to the Maple Leafs a ton this season and for good reason.
He's a huge presence on the ice, will fight when needed, has playoff production and can be a much cheaper cost than Coyle given his pending UFA status.
This year Frederic has been a bit under par compared to his previous two seasons, however he has seven goals and seven assists, plus 132 hits.
His potential to add offense (along with Bobby McMann and Max Domi potentially) and his tenacity makes the perfect player for Craig Berube.
He's also another weapon Toronto can take away from Boston, as Siegel writes:
There needs to be a move done eventually, and while it might be a bit tougher to make a move given their heated rivalry, but perhaps Brad Treliving and Cam Neely can put tension aside for the betterment of both sides.
