With the Toronto Maple Leafs heading into Calgary on Tuesday night, they will need to do so while without arguably their MVP as Mitch Marner was absent again from practice, and is more than likely not going to play against the Flames.
It's a truly unfortunate turn of events for not only the Maple Leafs, who desperately need their injury woes to hold off for a minute, but for Marner who is in the middle of a career year and is looking to make bank going into free agency; any injury can derail much needed momentum.
It's a shame that the Maple Leafs can't stay healthy. They've lost at various points this season: Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Max Domi, Anthony Stolarz, Jake McCabe, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Joseph Woll, Anthony Stolarz, Connor Dewar and the list goes on and on and on.
The prospect of how this team looks when everyone is healthy is scary, but it feels at times they are trotting out half of an AHL team because they can't stay off the shelf.
This latest loss is perhaps the most critical of all. Not to take anything away from any of the other injured players but Marner has been the team's MVP and is having the season of a lifetime.
In 52 games this season, Marner has put up 16 goals and 54 assists becoming the fastest Maple Leafs player to reach 70 points since Doug Gilmour and Dave Andreychuk did so back in 1993-94.
If Marner is to miss any extended period of time, this is horrible news for the Leafs' prospects going into the playoffs. They have already relinquished their spot in the Atlantic and with Ottawa very close behind; one slip up can lead to a catastrophic downfall.
Toronto will need their best effort from everyone involved tonight, especially Max Domi who is slated to skate in Marner's place. It's time the team stepped it up, much like Marner did in the past.
More details to come.
