William Nylander's IG post sparks speculation
On July 22nd, Toronto Maple Leafs' star William Nylander posted a video on his Instagram story that has since sent the fan base into a frenzy.
The post was about his little brother Alex, who was squatting, and how he is a beast in the gym.
Typically, the brothers spend the bulk of the off-season together, but this year is different. Alex is without an NHL contract, and the Maple Leafs could use some help in the secondary scoring department.
Right after the post went live, Maple Leafs fans started connecting the dots and talking about how the team should sign Alex Nylander to a contract for the upcoming season.
Furthermore, hockey reporter Josh Wegman for the Score discussed what Nylander could sign for on the open market.
«It was mildly surprising that the Columbus Blue Jackets chose not to tender an $814,000 qualifying offer to retain Nylander's services with the way he caught fire down the stretch of the 202324 campaign,»
Wegman would go on to say
«Nylander will likely only garner a one-year deal for under $1 million. That's great news for the Maple Leafs, who are nearly capped out but could use further competition for a middle-six winger spot. The potential to play on a line with his brother, William, is intriguing for all parties involved.»
If this is true, the Maple Leafs should be able to fit the former eighth overall pick into their salary cap. As of right now they have $1.2 million in cap space, and depending on what other moves they have up their sleeves to clear cap room, signing Nylander could be worth the price.
Last season, the 26-year-old had 11 goals and four assists in 23 games after joining the Columbus Blue Jackets.
