Now three-quarters of the way done the year, The Athletic has named it's most disappointing players of the 2022-23 season.
Jonathan Huberdeau had expectations set very high for him when he was traded to Calgary in the Matthew Tkachuk deal. Expectations were set even higher when the Flames signed him to an eight-year $84-million extension before he ever even played a game in their jersey.
Now on pace for only 54 points in a full 82 games, Huberdeau has definitely been the most disappointing player in the league.
The Vancouver Canucks made quite possibly the most confusing trade in cap-era history, dumping three bad one-year deals (and the ninth overall pick) to the Coyotes in exchange for six years of the aging Oliver Ekman-Larsson at $7.26-million.
Ekman-Larsson wasn't bad last season, putting up some solid defensive numbers, but this season he's been a disaster. If it weren't for his contract and leadership, he'd most likely be a healthy scratch most nights.
Jack Campbell signed a five-year $25-million deal in Edmonton immediately when free agency began, and it was supposed to be the deal that solidified Edmonton as a cup contender. Instead, Campbell now plays second fiddle to rookie Stuart Skinner, and is putting up the worst numbers of his career.
Kyle Dubas took a calculated risk in not signing Campbell, and it looks to have paid off.
It's never nice to be on a list like this one, but with the disappointment these players have been so far, they've definitely earned it.
Hopefully we see some turnaround next season!
